South Berkeley Youth Arts Summit

When: Wed., May 13, 7 p.m. 2009
Price: $8, students $5

Having a plethora of arts programs in Berkeley has clearly paid off. For proof, one need only glance at the list of hometown superstars (i.e., JormaTaccone, Ambrose Akinmusire, ArielSchrag) who launched their careers in a high school drama club, jazz band, or drawing class. More importantly, Berkeley has produced a new generation of dilettantes who are conversant not only in hip-hop, but in all the traditions that came before. On Wednesday, May 13, at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley), Berkeley will celebrate its various incubators with the South Berkeley Youth Arts Summit, which will feature the Longfellow Middle School Jazz Band, Ballet Folklórico, hip-hop and modern dance choreography by Dance Envisions, the Afro-Peruvian Youth Ensemble, and La Peña's Kids Bomba Workshop.7 p.m., $8, $5 for students.
