Drama, SciFi/Fantasy
Iffy sci-fi thriller scenario is salvaged by Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance as a confused army officer who wakes up on a commuter train heading into Chicago. The main things Colter Stevens (Gyllenhaal) wants to know are: 1) Why do I suddenly have another identity? 2) What mission am I being ordered to carry out by those people on the TV screen in my head? and 3) Who is this woman seated across from me (Michelle Monaghan) and how do I get to know her better? To say any more would constitute an unforgivable plot spoiler, but let’s just say that Capt. Stevens’ military handlers, played by Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright, don’t necessarily have his best interests at heart. But then, anyone who has seen a spy thriller in the past twenty years should already know that. The screenplay is by Ben Ripley. Able direction by Duncan Jones (Moon) (93 min.)
Director: Duncan Jones
Writer: Ben Ripley
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga, Michelle Monaghan, Jeffrey Wright, Russell Peters, James A. Woods, Michael Arden, Cas Anvar, Joe Cobden and Neil Napier
