Comedy, Musical
If we must accept that Bernie Mac is actually gone, then it’s a comfort to have Soul Men, the finest performance of his career, as his big-screen goodbye. He and Samuel L. Jackson star as Floyd Henderson and Louis Hinds, soul legends who, when their former bandleader Marcus Hooks (John Legend) dies, decide to drive cross-country to New York for a farewell concert at the Apollo. Problem is, they hated Marcus, who abandoned them like Lionel Richie did the Commodores. Brace yourself for an almost nonstop torrent of creative obscenities like the soon-to-be-classic "possum-face muthafucka." Soul Men won’t win any awards, but it manages to combine crudeness, poignancy, and even a little drama for a whole lot of fun (103 min.).
