Oliver Stone’s narrative take on the case of US intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, in a convincing performance) explains Snowden’s release of thousands of top-secret government communications as the moral effort of a conscientious objector. Working from a script adapted by director Stone and writer Kieran Fitzgerald from books by Anatoly Kucherena and Luke Harding, Stone depicts Snowden’s resistance as the logical conclusion to his career as a patriotic true believer, with a gallery of shadowy spooks — among them Rhys Ifans as Snowden’s CIA boss — blocking his way. Thus the disillusioned technocrat emerges as a uniquely American dissident. Well conceived supporting roles by Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Tom Wilkinson, and Ben Schnetzer. Yet another topical powder keg by the maker of JFK and Born on the Fourth of July (134 min).
