Social-problem pic doesn’t try to aim too high, and succeeds. Relatively speaking. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is completely believable as Kate, an alcoholic, crack-smoking elementary school teacher continually slipping off the ledge while her aiding and abetting husband Charlie (Aaron Paul) looks on. The real trouble is that almost all of the characters are emotional infants, dead irresponsible — that’s an interesting challenge director James Ponsoldt and his co-screenwriter Susan Burke set themselves, and it makes the drama all the more difficult to swallow. Costarring Nick Offerman, Octavia Spencer, and Mary Kay Place. (85 min.)
