Comedy, Drama, Romance
Extra-folksy light relationship drama makes good use of its cast –- Dennis Quaid as a grumpy university English lit professor in need of love; Thomas Haden Church as his amiably unemployed adopted brother; Ellen (Juno) Page as the prof’s bright but emotionally needy daughter; Sarah Jessica Parker as the prof’s girlfriend, a doctor who straightens everything out. Mark Jude Poirier’s dialogue doesn’t exactly oust The Royal Tenenbaums or The Squid and the Whale, but this family-go-round sitcom is a lot more accessible, thanks to the sweetness director Noam Murro spreads around (93 min.).
