Danny Boyle’s best film since Trainspotting sends the filmmaker to India, where a resourceful, engaging young Muslim chai wallah named Jamal Malik (TV actor Dev Patel) is competing successfully on the local version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Trouble is, the show’s smarmy host (Bollywood vet Anil Kapoor) as well as the brutal police suspect Jamal is cheating, and have him arrested. Therein hangs a wondrous tale, a fable from the slums of Mumbai. The second-unit work by Loveleen Tandan is colorful and intense, and all the actors excel, but it’s really Simon Beaufoy’s screenplay, adapted from a novel by Vikas Swarup, that grabs us by asking the question: Is it a crime to be poor in India? Costarring Irfan Khan and Freida Pinto. Again, director Boyle has found the perfect match for his showboat visual sense, not to mention his sympathy for social justice where none exists (120 min.).
