Slide Hampton

When: Tue., April 8, 7 p.m. 2008
Price: $10-$25

Angela Wellman is not only the founder of the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music, but also one of the bay's most articulate trombonists. So it's not surprising that she invited senior trombone great, Grammy winner, NEA Jazz Master, and congressionally acclaimed "National Treasure" Slide Hampton to host two nights of interactive presentations on Monday, April 7, and Tuesday, April 8, at the Conservatory (1616 Franklin St., Oakland). For nearly six decades Hampton has been a trend-setter in taste and sophistication in jazz, working with the top names in the field, and performing at all the great festivals and venues from Carnegie Hall on down. These appearances are not regular concerts, but a mix of performance and trombone demonstration, interspersed with insights from his life. 7 p.m., $25, $10 for students and seniors, free for those under 13.
