Sleepy Sun

When: Fri., Oct. 18, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $10, $12
Back in 2005, five UC Santa Cruz students put together a bluesy garage-rock band called Mania. A couple years later, the group shifted into a more psychedelic, stoner-y riff-rock sound, and Sleepy Sun was born. The now-San-Francisco-based group, which is largely composed of the same original members (but no longer features vocalist Rachel Fannan), has refined its sound over the years: It still mines that fuzzy, drowsy Seventies sound but with stronger attention to songcraft. A new seven-inch vinyl features “11:32” (not a reference to song length), whose smoldering riffs and reverb-y haze invite a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-meets-Brian Jonestown Massacre comparison, and “The Lane,” a more restrained psych track that builds into a particularly stirring climax, as Bret Constantino’s soaring vocals make it apparent that this band has more in its arsenal than nostalgia. At Brick and Mortar Music Hall (1710 Mission St., San Francisco), with Light Fantastic and Dylan Shearer.
