Romantic comedy
Jason Sudeikis, and to a lesser extent Alison Brie, whoop and whinny in several octaves in writer-director Leslye Headland’s hyper-chatty romantic comedy, which contains at least two significant thrusts in the development of the genre. One is the radical notion that promiscuity doesn’t necessarily lead to wisdom; the other is the film’s extra-salty sex talk, a quantum leap forward (or backward, depending on your POV) in social relations as depicted in movies. Two lonely college students meet, have sex, part, forget about each other for years, then reunite, sadder but no wiser, as compulsive cheaters. Sudeikis hits his stride in scene one and builds. He just may be the ideal American comic film actor of his generation. Even when it’s dumb, Headland’s second movie (after 2012’s Bachelorette) is smarter than the competition. Costarring Amanda Peet and Adam Scott (95 min.).
