It says a lot that Matt Pike decided to reconvene his old band Sleep now. His current outfit, High on Fire, has been on a steady upward trajectory since Sleep disbanded in the late Nineties, and, having just released a very well-received sixth album, De VermisMysteriis, will join the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival this summer, playing to stadium-size crowds. In other words, unlike some reunion tours, this one isn't happening because the musicians' relevancy has slipped away. Quite the contrary. After a successful reunion gig a few years ago for an appearance at All Tomorrow's Parties, the members of Sleep -- guitarist/singer Pike, bassist Al Cisneros, and Neurosis drummer Jason Roeder (filling in for Chris Hakius) -- decided to keep that momentum going with occasional, sporadic shows, including two dates at the Regency Ballroom and a secret show at Eli's Mile High Club. To celebrate the "epic deluxe" reissue of the one-song, hour-long, bong-hitting soundtrack/album Dopesmoker (which its record label refused to release and led to the band's breakup), Sleep will play a handful of US tour dates, including The Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Tuesday, June 5. Oxbow and Kowloon Walled City open. Expect the haze to be thick. 8 p.m., $25.
