Slap Hitter: Tennis, Everyone?

Lotsa love to pass out to the local media for a change. The Wimbledon weekend got all the play it deserved, and kudos go out to the Bay Areans who covered the Finals weekend in the style it deserved. National journos seem to take pride in being narrow minded and provincial in their sports tastes, and as we head into Olympic season, I am grateful to be blogging in a place where it's not the height of political wit to be dissing sports that have the same demands but less of a Q factor than the ones we see every weekend.

The Nadal/Federer final was just the last act of a tennis tour de force. Bruce Jenkins in the Chronicle wrote a beauty about saving the best for Wimbledon's concluding match under the sun. Meanwhile KNBR, where every weekend promo promises us a look back at a typical lousy Giant homestand, instead apologizes on their Tuesday tease for talking so much tennis on Monday. And why not? The fact that the two best women tennis players in the world shared the same mailing address for nearly 20 years and continue to rule the roost well after everybody dismissed them as in a hurry to get on with their modeling/acting/celebrity careers has got to be worth at least a moment to say, "Huh" if nothing else.

Be grateful today you live in the Bay, a place where there's room to be inclusive of more than three sports. Of course it helps if your teams are the Giants, Niners or Raiders, then you'll be more likely to make room in your sports heart for a championship effort. It's nice to know that those reporting the sports in our lives notice too.— Kibby Kleiman
