Slap Hitter: Savage Hate for A's Listeners

The A's weak radio station, KTRB, has made tuning in to the Green and Gold even more difficult with the decision to add the awful Michael Savage to the airways before A's games for the 2010 season. Not only do we lose one of the more thoughtful voices on the radio, as pre-pre-game host Martie Lurie will now broadcast for the Giants while the Athletics substitute a half hour of informative sports talk for a half hour of half-assed right-wing provocation.

If it feels like the movie Major League, A's fans can't be faulted. Stripping the team of a signal with power enough to reach over the Caldecott tunnel and now saddling the team with a lead in from a guy who thinks Tea Party Republicans are appeasers, seems like another brick to our collective noggins. Shut down the third deck, kill off Fan Fests, keep the only losing manager we've had in two decades, refuse to market and imagine that, attendance and interest have declined every year since 2006. An owner who only speaks to say he won't stay in the city, TV coverage now only accessible for a price, spring is in the air in Oakland and it smells like decay.

Used to be you could at least soothe your soul with extended baseball before the patchwork A's took the field, and that helped us stand apart from our West Bay betters, now the radio station that we call home decided a nice warm-up of paranoid pandering might better put us in the mood for A's baseball. It must be working; I am certainly developing a more hateful attitude with each passing season.
