Slap Hitter: Old guy is So Money at Golden Gate

Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Only three weeks left at Golden Gate Fields racetrack, but for senior citizen Roberto Gonzalez the dean of Bay Area jockeys, this weekend continued the front-runner's run to the top of the rider standings. Dozens of top jocks have come and gone, but like the XMas trees sprouting along the Frontage Road en route to the racetrack, Gonzo is a perennial who nobody would notice unless he stopped showing up.

Gonzalez has always been one of our favorites; when putting down a bet, we love knowing that he will run his horse to the lead and then hang on for dear life. Want a closer coming from the clouds? You got the wrong jock. Rather enjoy the white knuckle flight of Gonzalez trying to stretch it out wire to wire.

Golden Gate is running nearly year round with the closure of Bay Meadows and features a ton more winning than most any other East Bay sports scene. In three weeks the awesome Handicapping challenge takes place, winners getting an all-expense trip to Vegas, baby, Vegas for the national championship of punters. My two cents--load up on Gonzalez if he's sitting on speed. When he's sitting one out, you're on your own. I'll tell you how I did it when the dust has settled--from Las Vegas. — Kibby Kleiman
