Slap Hitter: A's Winning is Fun, Giants Losing is Better

After the Oakland Athletics swept the San Francisco Giants out of the East Bay following a 3-0 victory today, rather than listen to the post-game celebration on the A's radio station, a.k.a. Two-tin-cans-tied-together-with-a-string, we instead tuned in to hear the post-mortems on the Giants station. It sounded like the tastiest sour grapes you can imagine.

The weekend series started with the pre-game host pretty sure that all things being equal, the Giants were a better squad. After today's game the same host, reluctantly considered that he is, at least for the moment, possibly, maybe mistaken.

A caller who had the temerity to suggest that the Giants could take a lesson from Moneyball, was first quizzed and then flunked for his partial knowledge of the text. The Athletics were paid the same pale compliment a few times, translated roughly as, "the A's at least know what kind of team they are". It was great! And it was made better by the crankiness of the host wondering if the rest of his shift was going to cover why his West Bay masters should make a trade, bunt, or fire the manager. I'm only sorry my drive didn't last for the full four-hour show.

Obviously, the A's pop gun offense is not going to be good enough to sweep anybody with any kind of offense, but hanging around 2 games out of first place still sounds pretty good. The Green and Gold only has to be better than the American League West, and by gum, they might have a puncher's chance at that.

Later this year, the Athletics will travel to the Phone Booth park by the Bay, and they may even drop a game or two, but bragging rights reside in the 510 for the time being, and if you don't believe it, you can do like me and tune in to 50,000 watts of whining to relive the happy moment.
