French farce passes the time harmlessly, as a klutzy family of rich eccentrics – led by Fabrice Luchini, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, and Juliette Binoche -- and the poor family down the hill co-exist uneasily in a Normandy beach town, circa 1910. Whatever social commentary point writer-director Bruno Dumont (The Life of Jesus, Flanders) has on his mind is overshadowed by the incessant pratfalls and an eerie subplot involving a series of disappearances. European films used to get away with this brand of sustained absurdism, but today that unrelieved silliness grates on the ear as well as on the eye (122 min., 2016, not rated) (K.V.)
