I don’t think you can call David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs “goth-rock” per se, but it certainly influenced the genre that would emerge a few years later. Appropriately, UK goth-rock band Skeletal Family took its name from a song on Diamond Dogs: “Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family.” The song has an up-tempo dance beat, dissonant guitars, and eerie melodies. You can hear all of these elements — and maybe even a bit of Siouxsie and the Banshees and some Bauhaus — in Skeletal Family’s music. Formed in 1982, Skeletal Family was part of the ’80s goth explosion, but never became as well-known as bands like Sisters of Mercy or Love and Rockets. But its high energy and dark sound certainly warranted it a spot with the bigger names. The band has broken up and reformed several times; its most recent run started in 2012.
