Sisters of Soul

When: Thu., Jan. 12, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $20

Themed lineups are sometimes a dicey thing, lest the presenter risk lumping a bunch of seemingly disparate acts into one billing -- sometimes at the expense of, you know, quality. Local promoter Mark T. Elliott was smart about it, though. His all-female hip-hop and soul showcase at Yoshi's features six women who genuinely stand head and shoulders above their peers -- male and female. Rapper Silk-E, who is mostly known for her work with The Coup, has been in the game for more than a decade. She got her first break after winning several rounds on an MTV talent show called The Cut, which was hosted by rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, of the group TLC. Silk-E performs alongside The Coup's longtime resident DJ Pam the Funkstress, poet-turned-emcee Ryan Nicole, folksy singer-songwriter Jamela "Mi Mi" Fluker, and blueswoman Nicole "But-Tah" Pearson. It happens at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero, Oakland) on Thursday, Jan. 12. 8 p.m., $20.
