At an Alpine mountain resort, eleven-year-old Simon (Kacey Mottet Klein) makes his living casually stealing high-end skis, snowboards, and accessories from careless vacationers, then selling them to his friends in the town below. Simon and his unhappy older sister Louise (Léa Seydoux) carry their class-struggle-heavy roles with ease, in this mesmerizing drama by Swiss-French writer-director Ursula Meier. Less a social commentary than a kaleidoscopic primer on human endeavor, Meier’s portrait possesses the spirit of a Balzac or a Bresson in its dry-eyed look at Simon and Louise. Their struggles are painful to observe, but in the end we come away relieved and somehow chastened, the same way we might feel after having our pocket picked by a true artist. (97 min.)
