Sister Spit

When: Tue., April 7, 7 p.m. 2015
Price: $10
Sister Spit has been featuring literary badasses since the early 1990s, when it was founded by Michelle Tea and Sini Anderson as an all-female open mic. In 1997, they took the event on the road, sending two vans full of “cutting edge dyke female writers and performers” to travel across the country and share their work — and they’ve been doing it ever since. Now, the community has morphed into Sister Spit-Next Generation, which features both established and emerging queer and queer-influenced performers of all genders. They’ll be showing up at Rock Paper Scissors (2278 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Tuesday with a lineup of rad readers. Among them is Mica Sigourney, the producer of the drag series WORK MORE!, as well as the drag arts event SomeTHING, and a founding member of the performing arts group Nicole Kidman Is Fucking Beautiful. Virgie Tovar, known for her smart and critical writing on fat discrimination and body image, will also grace the stage, alongside Myriam Gurba, author of Dahlia Season and Wish You Were Me. Kate Schatz, Miriam Klein Stahl, and Tom Cho will be performing, too.
