Comedy drama, Music, Romance
Writer-director John Carney (Once) returns to the tuneful streets of Dublin, Ireland for the sweet-as-soda-pop story of an impressionable teenage boy named Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), his would-be model girlfriend Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and the rock band they start, circa 1985, in the alley outside Conor’s strict parochial high school. Irish coming-of-agers such as this are invariably sweet, but not so sweet that you feel like a fool for going along with their charming dreamers. A gentle exercise in sentimental Irish improbability (106 min.).
