Comedy drama, Romance
One hundred percent predictable, yet strangely kind of fun. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper manage to rise above the material – but Lawrence more than Cooper and only temporarily – as a newly de-institutionalized bi-polar patient named Pat (Cooper) and a similarly lonely neighborhood loser named Tiffany (Lawrence) discover romantic commonalities in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia. A clear case of OOB: Obvious Oscar Bait, hampered/bolstered by the slapstick support of Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver as Pat’s Archie-Bunker-style parents and director David O. Russell’s penchant for dialogue delivered at full roar. And yes, there’s a Big Dance Contest for the young lovers to enter. Try to picture All in the Family with pills. Russell adapted the screenplay from Matthew Quick’s novel. (122 min.)
