The Sierra Club Bay Chapter, the most influential environmental group in the East Bay, has endorsed Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan to be Oakland’s next mayor. “Kaplan has a strong record of success promoting sustainable development and environmental policies,” the club said in a statement. “She is a longtime champion of transit oriented development and livable communities. She has the vision and experience to move Oakland forward and to revitalize our economy in an ecologically sustainable way.”

The endorsement is sure to give Kaplan a boost in the mayor’s race. “Many of my proudest accomplishments representing all Oaklanders have been focused on sustainable development, including the new free green Broadway transit shuttle and zoning to support smart growth,” Kaplan said in a prepared statement. “I am thrilled to have the Sierra Club's endorsement. Environmental and community leaders are joining me to win this election for the future of Oakland."

In a nod to ranked-choice voting, the new voting system to be used in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Leandro this November, the Sierra Club endorsed Councilwoman Jean Quan as its second choice for mayor, said chapter chair Kent Lewandowski. The club’s third choice is ex-state Senator Don Perata.
