In the 1990s, married partners Barbara Mulas and Mark Drazek defined the sophisticated neighborhood eatery at Berkeley’s ZAX Tavern, whose fans sank into deep depression when the place closed in 2007. Many of the menu’s faves have turned up at Sidebar, the duo’s mod California brasserie at the edge of Grand Lake. With its chill vibe, bar menu designed by Johnny Raglin of SF’s Absinthe, and prices calibrated to the new Depression, Sidebar succeeds at defining the neighborhood restaurant for the post-Millennium. Not every dish works, but the kitchen has a talent for deeply satisfying comfort foods like gooey panini and crab-spiked deviled eggs.
