Horror, Suspense/Thriller
Shutter, the latest J-horror remake, has a fresh twist on the genre: it’s actually based on a Thai flick, and is only set in Japan. But it does follow all the same rules, including featuring a pissed-off, vengeful ghost. This one appears in photographs after an American in Tokyo hits her on the road, stalking her victim via supernatural means instead of the more traditional I Know What You Did Last Summer method. Director Masayuki Ochiai actually seems to hold disdain for his characters, but isn’t very good at scares that stick with viewers past “Boo!” (85 min.).
