When I attended the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2011, a few of my friends kept excitedly mentioning a group called Shpongle. I had no idea what they were talking about, but I liked to roll the name around in my mouth. Shpongle. I figured, with a name like that, that the music must be weird — turns out that’s the understatement of the century. Simon Posford and Raja Ram, aka Shpongle, have been shattering minds by fusing sounds of world music — for example, Moroccan drums, Turkish operatic singing, and the silver flute — with psychedelic electronic music and vivid, trippy imagery for nearly two decades. The effect is nothing short of mind-blowing. Every few years, Shpongle switches up its live show (which, in the past, has also included a bevy of theatrically costumed dancers). At the Regency Ballroom (1290 Sutter St., San Francisco) this week, the UK-based duo will debut Shpongletron, the duo’s third incarnation. At the very least, expect the experience to spark hours of discussion.
