Tote that barge, lift that bale. If there's any organization that's sensitive to the groundbreaking treatment of miscegenation and racism in Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein's Show Boat, it's the Oakland East Bay Symphony. Not only does Music Director Michael Morgan have a wonderful feel for this kind of music, but his use of amplification also helps to partially overcome the challenges of the Paramount Theatre's intractable acoustic. Don't miss this one-night concert performance, which stars Julie Adams as Magnolia Hawks, Ben Jones as Gaylord Ravenal, and Debbie de Coudreauxas Julie Laverne, and the Oakland Symphony Chorus under the direction of Lynne Morrow. At the Paramount Theatre(2025 Broadway, Oakland) on Friday, May 15. 8 p.m., $25-70. OEBS.org or 800-745-3000.
