Shock G & DJ Fuze

When: Fri., Aug. 26, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $12, $17

Surely you're familiar with "The Humpty Dance," that immortal 1990 single from Oakland hip-hop group Digital Underground. With its grinding bass line, funky horn section, and looped drum samples, the song took itself seriously as music, but nonetheless featured a lewd and humorous rap about, well, humping. It was the work of Digital Underground rapper Shock G, who donned a fake nose to perform the song, using a new stage handle: Humpty Hump. Twenty-one years later, it's still one of the most inspired pieces in the hip-hop canon. Shock G returns to the EastBay this weekend to reunite with former Digital Underground turntablist DJ Fuze, who toured with the group internationally to promote "Humpty Dance." Fuze, who graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in international development, and ultimately reestablished himself as a world music DJ, remains one of the best wax slingers in town. They'll take the stage together at Shattuck Down Low (2284 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley) on Friday, Aug. 26. 9 p.m., $12, $17. ShattuckDownLow.com
