Shirley Caesar and the Rance Allen Group

When: Sat., Feb. 18, 3 & 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $25-$35

Two of the major figures in gospel music share the bill at what promises to be the hottest gospel concert to hit the Bay Area in ages. Shirley Caesar has been the genre's most prominent female firebrand since emerging in 1958 as a member of the Caravans. Once offered a contract to sing rock 'n' roll, she agreed - on the condition she be allowed to "rock for Jesus and roll for the Holy Ghost." Allen, known to many for his 1975 crossover hit "Ain't No Need of Crying," is one of the vocal wonders of the world. He sings mostly in a robust baritone, yet is able to soar into the soprano stratosphere, then plummet to a booming bass. They will appear Saturday, Feb. 18, at 3 and 7:30 p.m. at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium (403 Civic Center Plaza, Richmond), $25-$35,
