Philadelphia rock quartet Sheer Mag’s latest LP A Distant Call has the bad-ass image of a road heading straight into the mouth of a cracked head that looks kind of like the Statue of Liberty. And then off in the distance, there lies a city being struck by lighting. Everything about the image, including the slanted blocked font is straight out of ’80s metal. Once you pull the record out of the sleeve and hit play, the music fits the cover completely. Meaty metal riffs, power-pop progressions, wailing-hooky vocals and mid-tempo energetic drumbeats. This is the fist-pumping working class rock ‘n’ roll you’ve longed for but didn’t want to go see such-and-such band on their 15th reunion tour to witness live. Sheer Mag are fresh — only formed in 2014 — and have the energy to play these songs with sincerity and without charging $150 a ticket.
