Busy actor Michael Fassbender (A Dangerous Method, X-Men: First Class) gets put through an Oscar-bait drill by director Steve McQueen. The gist of it is that Fassbender’s nervous Manhattan sex addict Brandon derives no thrills whatsoever from his obsessive carnal conquests – not even the implied one with his sister, chanteuse Carey Mulligan. But you might have guessed that. He’s leading an Empty, Meaningless Existence and hates every minute of it, just like the protagonists of every other lazy social problem movie. For what it’s worth, there’s nothing wrong with Fassbender’s performance, but there’s everything the matter with co-writer (with Abi Morgan) McQueen’s flabby, trite scenario. (99 min.)
