SFJAZZ: Jenny Scheinman

When: Sun., March 8, 7 p.m. 2009
Price: $20

In the past few years HumboldtCounty native Jenny Scheinman has become one of the most prominent violinists in New York, playing with a slew of pop musicians (Bono, Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, Linda Perry) as well as jazz royalty like guitarist Bill Frisell. She's also a singer-songwriter and arranger of relative renown in both the pop and jazz worlds. Born to folk musician parents, Scheinman says she internalized all sorts of music growing up, and now they appear to be bleeding out of her: In 2008 she even set her violin down and recorded a folky vocal album. While not quite as good as Scheinman's instrumental work, it shows the breadth of her talent. Jenny Scheinman performs as part of SFJAZZ's 10th Anniversary spring season on Sunday, Mar. 8, at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (701 Mission St., SF). She'll lead on violin, with Steve Cardenas on guitar, Greg Cohen on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums. 7 p.m., $20.
