SFJAZZ: Hugh Masekela 70th Birthday Celebration

When: Fri., April 24, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $25-$55

Hugh Masekela was one of South Africa's top jazz players when he packed his trumpet and left his homeland to go into self-imposed exile to protest apartheid. He was one of the first African musicians to make an impression on the world stage and his early tours with his then-wife Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte were marked by his exuberant showmanship. Masekela turns seventy this year, but he has the energy of a man half his age. His most recent album, Phola, is getting rave reviews and his touring band matches its leader's irrepressible energy. Hugh Masekela and his band will play at the Palace of Fine Arts (3301 Lyon St., San Francisco) on Friday, Apr. 24. 8 p.m., $25- $55. SFJAZZ.org
