SF Sketchfest

When: Jan. 26-Feb. 2 2010

Most of the comedians at this year's SF Sketchfest are known for up-to-date, topical humor, be they puff-culture buffs, vigorous newspaper readers, or people who compulsively check Yahoo! News. Yet nothing could have been more on point than the festival programmers' decision to honor talk-show host Conan O'Brien, right as he sparredwith Jay Leno for a hotly contested late-night time slot on NBC. O'Brien's appearance at the Herbst Theater, originally scheduled for January 17, had to be postponed until after he divorced from the network and resolved the Tonight Show imbroglio. In the meantime, a bevy of nationally known comics will bring the funny to San Francisco venues including the Punchlineand the Purple Onion, as well as such improbable places as Yoshi's Jazz Club. This week's highlights include Ask a Ninja live at Cobb's Comedy Club (915 Columbus Ave.; Thursday, Jan. 28; 8 p.m., $15); Siskel & Negro Present the Justus League at Eureka Theater (215 Jackson St.; Thursday, Jan. 28; 8 p.m., $15); and John Hodgman in conversation with Dave Eggars at Cobb's (Saturday, Jan. 30; 2 p.m., $25.50).
