If you didn't get any action on Valentine's Day, it's not too late: Pop-jazz quartet Sex Mob will spice up Duende (468 19th St., Oakland) on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Formed in the arty clubs of lower Manhattan, Sex Pop draws from popular music to make its kitschy, avant-garde jazz. A typical Sex Mob set will feature covers of James Bond theme songs, ABBA, Nirvana, Prince, James Brown, The Rolling Stones, and Grateful Dead. Sex Mob is led by Steven Bernstein on slide trumpet, respected for both his musicianship and work as a bandleader, with Briggan Krauss on saxophone, Tony Scherr on bass, and Kenny Wollesen on drums. The group claims to never rehearse or have a set list in advance of performing, and Bernstein improvisationally conducts and arranges onstage. It's pretty rare to have these guys on the West Coast -- they're usually either touring Europe or playing a residency at 55 Bar in the West Village -- but if you miss the Duende show, Sex Mob will be at Brick & Mortar Music Hall (1710 Mission St., San Francisco) the next night, Thursday, Feb. 21. 9 p.m., $15.
