Scottish Highland Games

When: Sat., July 11, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sun., July 12, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. 2009
Price: $8-$20

It's not every day that you get to see muscle-bound men in skirts throwing 17- to 25-pound river-rock stones, cabers the size of telephone poles, huge hammer shot puts, weights over pole vaults, and other big, blocky things -- while screaming. But such extreme sports comprise only part of the 35th Annual Scottish Highland Games, held this weekend (Saturday & Sunday, July 11 & 12) at the Dunsmuir Historic Estate (2960 Peralta Oaks Ct., Oakland). Other attractions include sheep dog demos, pipe band competitions, a children's glen, gatherings of clans, Highland country dancing, and culinary delights (we're expecting haggis, crowdies, and perhaps some delicious Scotch pies). 10 a.m.-5 p.m., $8-$12.
