Action, Romantic comedy
Gadget-happy auds can admire this lightweight teen comedy’s CGI-stuffed life-as-a-video-game premise, but for everyone else it’s more of an intermediary showcase for actors Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Kieran Culkin. Toronto post-teen garage-band bassist Scott (Cera) desires cool, unattainable local girl (Winstead) but must first overcome her “seven deadly exes” while Scott’s gay roommate (Culkin) looks on. Maybe it’s time Cera (Juno, Youth in Revolt) branched out into roles with some teeth. Edgar Wright directs from a screenplay he wrote with Michael Bacall, adapted from Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels (112 min.).
