One of the three men who founded Scharffen Berger Chocolate, and delighted the East Bay with both their desserts and their unique West Berkeley factory, died last week. According to the East Bay Business Times, Robert Steinberg started the company in South San Francisco with John Scharffenberger and Peter Wais; the company moved to Berkeley in 2001. Steinberg was a family physician and winemaker, in addition to his contributions to the world of confection. Remarkably, Steinberg's fatal cancer was discovered 19 years ago; the diagnosis led him to leave medicine and ultimately make his mark on premium chocolate.
