Sarah Manning and Shatter the Glass

When: Fri., Nov. 9, 6-10 p.m. 2007
Price: $40, $60 w/ dinner

Alto saxophonist Sarah Manning was gasping for breath after finishing her opening number, an original called "Small Fire Breathing Dragon," in a 2005 performance at Yoshi's Jazz House. It was inspired by a trip to KCSM'sDesertIsland, she told the audience. "I had to bring a luxury item," she said, explaining that she chose the dragon because "it would start fires and if it had wings, it would potentially take me off the island." The dragon provides a nice way of getting into Manning's 2006 release, Two Rooms Same Door: Live at Yoshi's, an album that shows the saxophonist's uptempo elasticity, her knack for composing in weird time signatures, and her preference for steely minor-chord voicings. A native New Englander and former women's studies major at Smith College, Manning is remarkably understated in person -- a woman who favors Numi Tea and the color green. On sax, though, she's excitable. Sarah Manning debuts her new quartet Shatter the Glass this Friday, Nov. 9 at the Oakland Museum. The show starts at 8 p.m. and costs $37.50, which includes dessert and champagne. MuseumCA.org/tickets or SarahManningMusic.com
