Re: “Most Dedicated Campaign Volunteer

And he is one of the nicest guys on the planet. It was a pleasure to campaign with him.

Re: “Oakland Council Should Worry About the Deficit, Not the Mayor’s Advisor

Nice artlcle. Watching the city council lately is like watching a bunch of kids in a sand box throw sand in each other's faces. Everyone after their own agenda and wanting to be right. There seems to be very little interest in helping the Mayor figure out a way to balance the budget without destroying so much of what makes our city wonderful: parks, libraries, art, good senior centers, etc.

Re: “Express Appoints New Co-Editors

Congratulations to Bob Gammon.
The work he did on the 2010 Oakland Mayoral campaign is worthy of another
award. And the work he is now producing on Lew Wolff, San Jose, Oakland and the Oakland A's is the most illuminating and transparent in quite a long time. Keep up the good work, Bob.

Re: “Perata Nearing Expenditure Cap

HUH? Did you read the same column I did? Jean Quan doesn't sound scared. She sounds sensible. She's also correct.
Ms. Quan may not be the most charismatic candidate but she is honest, loves Oakland, and has the experience to not have too big a learning curve when she becomes Mayor. In my neighborhood, there are tons of Jean Quan for Mayor signs and, in a wonderful example of her commitment to Oakland being a green city, she is recycling old lawn signs and doesn't have to spend money.
I love that about her. She is creative and comes up with ideas and solutions that often don't require money.

Re: “Monday Must Read

"Two failed"? What are you talking about? Jean Quan has done amazing things for her district 4. They love her. No council member has ever worked harder for a district in years. And Rebecca though she has no district, is smart and articulate and has brought good ideas to the table. In these years, where there is no money and alot of backsliding, it's good to know that some people love Oakland and just keep working hard.

Re: “Kaplan and Quan Disagree with Perata on Cop Pay Cuts

Sounds like some of you did not attend the budget discussion in East Oakland, where the audience fervently supported the idea of Oakland police taking their share of the cuts. It's a matter of math-- when police and fire take up 75% of the budget, and you have to cut $31 million, you can't do it all on the backs of the other city services-- it would mean eliminating the library AND parks and recreation and you'd still be $7 million short!

2. Check the facts about Jean Quan's efforts on behalf of the school district. She was the only school board member who asked the OUSD COO, the County Chief Financial Officer AND the independent auditors if there was enough money to extend a pay raise to the teachers in 2003. All those "experts" assured her there was. Then, AFTER she left the school board, they discovered that she was right and they were wrong. Her efforts during her 12 years on the school board fixed schools with leaky roofs, seismically retrofitted auditoriums at schools that are designated Red Cross Shelters in emergencies, rebuilt two schools that were dangerously close to earthquake faults, provided funds for lower class sizes, libraries, music and art and technology in the schools.

3. The bottom line here is that by its charter, the City of Oakland must approve a balanced budget by June 30. I don't want to have a city that is only about highly paid cops. If our kids cannot go to safe libraries and recreation centers, if our seniors have no support, than ALL this city will be about is fighting crime. There's a lot more to Oakland than it's crime statistics!
