Sara Gazarek CD Release One Day Only Staff Pick

When: Mon., Sept. 16, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $23-$49
By necessity or inclination, Los Angeles jazz vocalist Sara Gazarek has taken her time developing a distinctive body of work. Possessing a bright, sunny tone that seems to resist deep shadows, she’s gradually expanded her palette from the American Songbook standards of her 2005 debut Yours (Native Language). Celebrating the release of her best album yet, Thirsty Ghost (MRI), she returns to the Bay Area with her stellar working band ace accompanist John Nelson on piano and keyboards, bassist Matt Aronoff, and Zach Harmon on drums, tabla and toys. Her voice has lost none of its iridescent luster, but she’s delving into treacherous emotional terrain where she artfully navigates the currents of loneliness, desire, and self-deception. Working on her own schedule, Gazarek has carved out a distinctive niche, a realm that grows more inviting with each visit.
