Though it's been fifteen years since the publication of Push, that book and its author, Sapphire, are still very much in the public consciousness, thanks to last year's Academy Award-winning film adaptation, Precious. Now comes The Kid, which tells the story of Precious' son, Abdul Jones, who must confront his violent origins in order to fulfill his artistic destiny. Sapphire reads from Push's sequel at Marcus Books (3900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland) on Thursday, July 21. 6:30 p.m.; free, but preferential seating given to those who purchase the book from Marcus in advance or at the event. 510-652-2344 or
