San Francisco Symphony Opening Night Gala Concert Critics' Pick Staff Pick

When: Wed., Sept. 3, 8:30 p.m. 2008
Price: $130-$250

As members of EastBay performing ensembles get in some extra winks before their seasons begin, the big outfits across the bay are preparing to make a major splash. First to come is the San Francisco Symphony, whose opening gala balances out the calories consumed in multi-location pre- and post-performance feasts with sometimes danceable music. The concert itself, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, includes the superb pianist Yefim Bronfman in Rachmaninoff's myth-building Piano Concerto No. 3. Also on the crowd-pleasing program: an excerpt from Delibes' colorful Sylvia Suite, and the irresistible Symphonic Dances from Bernstein's great West Side Story. At Davies Symphony Hall (201 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco) on Wednesday, September 3. 8:30 p.m., $250. or 415-864-6000.
