Sam's Corner featuring Charles McNeal

When: Fri., Aug. 23, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $15-$20
Before he became the proprietor of one of the East Bay’s coziest venues, pianist Sam Rudin was a regular presence on the national blues circuit. As the leader of Hurricane Sam & the Hotshots he wowed audiences with a vivid keyboard style that blithely embraced jazz and blues, barrelhouse, boogie-woogie, and bebop. While dozens of acts play his living-room-like Back Room every months, Rudin is carving out a monthly spot for himself known as Sam’s Corner, and on Friday he’s joined by powerhouse saxophonist Charles McNeal. A former Bay Area mainstay now living in Las Vegas, McNeal is a professional’s pro, a highly versatile player who can inject a bracing jolt of soul into any situation. He’s worked with heavyweights in jazz, blues and pop, including McCoy Tyner and Steve Turre, Boz Scaggs and Lyle Lovett, Lavay Smith, Brenda Boykin and the Dynamic Miss Faye Carol (who featured him at the Back Room last year as a special guest).
