Samora and Elena Pinderhughes

When: Mon., March 9, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $10

Elena and SamoraPinderhughes are the jazz equivalent of the child spelling-bee champs on Spellbound: At thirteen and seventeen years old, respectively, they've already logged an impressive history of performances and session dates, beginning with a gig at Yoshi's when he was thirteen and she was nine. Samora apparently started playing Latin percussion as a toddler and took up piano ten years ago, studying with all the best teachers in the Bay Area (including Bill Bell, Geechi Taylor, and Susan Muscarella). Last year he performed an original piece, "Caminando," at Carnegie Hall. Equally precocious, his younger sister Elena also tours internationally at jazz festivals and concert venues, playing alongside her brother in the Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble and in their trio, Catch 22. If you can get over the absolute heart-wrenching adorableness of a teenage brother and sister cutting records together, you'll find their musicianship is actually quite mature. Samora and Elena Pinderhughes play OaklandYoshi's (510 Embarcadero) on Monday, Mar. 9. 8 p.m., $10.
