Comedy, Drama
Steve Buscemi returns to familiar territory with the bleakly comic role of John Alighieri, a hopelessly degenerate gambler who can’t resist ridiculous long shots – his favorite is scratch-off lotto tickets. Writer-director Hue Rhodes, meanwhile, can’t resist running Buscemi through a routine series of daffy Sun Belt situations, as John and fellow insurance fraud investigator Virgil (Romany Malco) take a road trip from Albuquerque to LV on the trail of a rogue Buick Riviera. Sure, it’s slackly written and artificially episodic, but it’s vintage Buscemi. Costarring Sarah Silverman as Jill, the Smiley Face gal (85 min.).
