Saigon Deli Sandwich & Taco Valparaiso may be the only restaurant in the Bay Area where you can eat al pastor-style pork in either a taco or inside a crunchy banh mi roll loaded with all of the usual Vietnamese sandwich condiments. Taken on their own, the shop’s tacos and banh mi are good enough to recommend, but the more fusion-y dishes are where the magic happens: al pastor banh mi (preferably with an extra splash of co-owner Tony Torres’ special red salsa) and shrimp a la diabla served over Asian-style white rice. Winners on more traditional Mexican and Vietnamese menus include fried fish tacos and banh cuon, a kind of Vietnamese steamed rice roll that’s filled with mushroom-studded pork.
