Re: “Why the Oakland A’s Should Rethink the Laney College Site

A question for all the folks against the Laney site: Do you oppose because you think there's just fundamentally no way to develop there without benefitting the neighborhood and the people that live there? Or is it more that you think it's *possible* to do this in a way that's good for the community -- but you just don't trust that the city and the A's are capable of actually succeeding at that?

I live in the block that will likely be most impacted by the project, E. 8th and 5th/6th. I'm completely torn. On the one hand, I think this is the best site for Oakland as a whole. On the other hand, it'd be a huge shame to see the neighborhood upended. There's life here in a way there just isn't in the SOMA area around AT&T park.

Dear A's: What's your plan to *enhance* the urban fabric of the area? Without a plan that has some serious visionary thinking (and not to mention the relentless political will and dollars to back it up), you're going to *replace* that fabric rather than enhancing it. And none of us neighbors want that.
