Rykarda Parasol

When: Fri., March 21, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $7
Back in 2008, San Francisco singer-songwriter Rykarda Parasol released her debut album, Our Hearts First Meet, introducing local music fans to her unique aesthetic — a noir-meets-Americana-meets-doo-wop sound (which is more than a little indebted to Nick Cave), bolstered by her unmistakable, dramatic voice. With her half-platinum-blonde, half-jet-black hair, she looks as cool as she sounds, but she also carries with her a palpable sense of grief and darkness. Since releasing her second album, For Blood and Wine, Parasol set off to travel the world, living and studying in Paris and playing throughout Europe with her Warsaw-based band. She released a third album, Against the Sun, in Europe last year, and is now back in the Bay Area. She played a solo acoustic show last week at Bimbo’s, and this week will play with her locally based band for the first time, at the Hemlock Tavern (1131 Polk St., San Francisco). If you miss it, Parasol will be back in town in late May to play more shows, and to continue working on her forthcoming as-yet-untitled fourth album with longtime producer Mark Pistel, who also plays bass in her band.
