Re: “Is Oakland Animal Services Killing Too Many Dogs?

I am a current volunteer at OAS and I absolutely can say that this shelter does the best they can. I have never seen dead dogs laying around just because we don't have "room". I've seen dead dogs that PEOPLE bring in- not that we have euthanized and I have NEVER seen a dog that we have euthanized, and I am at the shelter more than once a week. If you guys want to mad at euthanasia in animals, blame the PEOPLE not the animal itself. Animals that get euthanized at OAS either have behavioral problems that are too dangerous to release into the world or are too sick to be cured such as parvo- a really deadly and contagious disease. Behavioral problems go back to the owner for bad training and not socializing the dog enough. The high number of animals at the shelter goes back to people.... has anyone heard of breeding? Please stop.

We are an open-door shelter. We take in every animal that comes through the door. We are constantly taking in dogs with problems such as: broken bones, mange, and more and they all get treated as best as we can provide. We have a big number of volunteers that give love and care to the animals at OAS. We do mental stimulation with adoptable dogs and help them become more adoptable. We have training classes and informational classes for volunteers. We send large amount of adoptable dogs to other rescues to help with space and high numbers of dogs we get because people are constantly surrendering their dogs, letting their dog loose and not keeping it in a safe environment. We have kongs that we pass out to dogs to keep them busy while they are in their kennel.

I love OAS. I love all the animals at OAS. All the people at OAS and I think it is a great, organized place. Director Megan Webb is always on the go in making the shelter a better place for our animals and volunteers here. She is an amazing person who always does the best she can. She often has an animal in her office who is recovering from some sort of trauma, the last one who stayed with her for a few weeks was a Doberman named Ike. Same with Martha, our animal care coordinator who is constantly taking dogs out who are not up for adoption yet and works with them in becoming more adoptable. She will literally sit outside with shy, scared dogs for a long time and get them to open up, and then I see them up for adoption a couple days later. She also currently has a puppy that is recovering from mange in her office.

It's sad to see a lot of dogs end up in the shelter because they want to make money from selling a puppy who often gets abused and neglected because they don't care what home they go to- they just want the money. We get dogs through our OPEN-DOOR everyday. Try using all the resources we have. We do a hell of a job!!
